Acne scarring and other pitted scars

How can dermal filler help acne scarring?

Acne scarring and scars from different causes such as injury can cause an amazing amount of distress. We regularly see patients seeking solutions to disfiguring and mentally traumatising scarring.

There are lots of potential solutions on the market to help scarring. The one solution Dr. Renée has found really effective is fillers; either dermal fillers or skin boosters.

Dermal fillers can be used to lift out deep sunken scars and improve the skin surface which has been disrupted by superficial scarring. Administering fillers into acne or other such scars is a simple procedure which can be done in one sitting; the results are instant with improvement over the next few days as the needle marks heal and the fillers settle.

Dr. Renée is often able to carry out some subcision (breaking down the scar tissue) as she places the filler which can improve the scars permanently. The photos below are real cases that she carried out, before and after, using dermal fillers all taken in the same sitting.

If the scarring is very superficial, so not ice pick or box, then normal dermal fillers are not suitable as they would need to be placed too superficially to have effect and in themselves would then be visible as lumps or nodules. Dr. Renée has a solution to this which she has been using for several years now with excellent effect; Restylane skin boosters. Designed to be placed superficially where they attract water and recondition the skin, the results are often excellent and now gives a solution to all acne scar types.

Do they work for all types of scarring?

Not all scars can be improved and Dr. Renée will assess you during your consultation to decide if she can help. We will only offer a treatment if we believe we can make some improvement.

Here at The Non Surgical Clinic we have both normal HA fillers and skin boosters so we usually have a solution for most scars, whatever the cause.  If we feel that dermal fillers won’t work because the scars are too superficial, the solution can often be skin boosters.

Skin boosters are done in three sittings initially; one a month and then one in a further six months and then another a year later. Due to the number of tiny injections needed on the day you may see lots of small needle marks, some bruising and swelling which settles over a few days. See our ‘skin boosters’ section for more detail on this treatment.

If we decide to use HA fillers, this can be done in one sitting. You may still have several needle marks as we target individual scars. This will be covered in full during your consultation.

How does the treatment work?

HA filler is injected directly underneath the scar to gently lift it out.

Skin boosters are fanned over the whole area of scarring to sit under the skin in the dermis and attract water.

What product is used?

We use a hyaluronic acid filler – normally Restylane Refyne for deeper scars and Restylane skin boosters for more superficial scars.

Will it hurt?

The filler is administered using a small needle and the treatment is relatively pain free. The filler contains a local anaesthetic.

How long does the treatment take?

Around 20-30 minutes.

Are there any side effects?

There will be some minor redness/needle marks and swelling to the treated area. This will take a few days to subside. There can be bruising which will last as long as a normal bruise for you.

When will I see results?

Results are instant and will improve over the coming weeks for HA filler.

Skin boosters will see an initial improvement and this will be added to with each treatment and as collagen is stimulated..

How long will results last?

9-12 months with a hyaluronic acid filler. However, our experience is that scars rarely return to their previous state due to a degree of subcision that occurs during treatment.

Skin boosters will see gradual improvement with each treatment and once you get to the 1 year treatment you should then only need one top up per year thereafter.

The amount of filler needed will be determined during your consultation.
