Facial Slimming

Why might you need facial slimming injections?

One reason for a ‘square’ look around the jaw and lower face is excessive build-up of the jaw muscles (masseters) due to tension, age, facial structure and stress. Some races tend to have a larger/squarer jaw.

An additional benefit is that people who feel stress in their jaw muscles will find relief as the tension dissipates. In fact, this treatment works well for jaw clenching/bruxism by relaxing the muscles responsible.

However, not all faces are suitable for the injections. For instance, where the widening effect is caused by excess fat rather than muscle build up in the lower cheek area, especially on either side of the mouth. Dr. Renée will assess your individual suitability for the procedure.

How does the treatment work?

A series of injections of the wrinkle-relaxing product are administered into the muscles around the sides of the face causing them to relax. Because this area of the masseter muscle is no longer working, like any other dormant muscle it shrinks quickly. This produces a slimming effect that can be very dramatic. The area of the muscle which is relaxed will ‘atrophy’ or shrink as it moves less. This is a highly efficacious and cost-effective non surgical option for reducing the width and shape of the lower face and jaw line. The results can vary and many nuances can be achieved. During your consultation Dr. Renée will guide you to the optimal course of treatment.

What product is used?

We use a product from Galderma called Azzalure – Botulinum Toxin Type A.

Will it hurt?

You may feel some mild discomfort from the needle but apart from that this procedure is relatively pain free.

How long does the treatment take?

5-10 minutes.

Are there any side effects?

As with all non surgical procedures, when carried out by a qualified medical practitioner the risk is very low.

However, with this treatment there are some things to be aware of.

The results improve over time. Initially you may experience slight weakness of your ‘chew’ if trying to chew something tough like a steak. However you will quickly acclimatise to this and not notice very quickly.

When will I see results?

You will begin to see the treatment working between 2-10 days after treatment, however full relaxation, and the final results, can take a month to develop.

How long do results last?

Around 6-9 months.

However, as with all non-surgical treatments, the results are temporary and the muscles will strengthen with time. The treatment has to be repeated to maintain the results.
