Jaw Clenching/Grinding

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical term for teeth clenching and grinding, and it can happen while awake or asleep and can lead to physical painful and severe dental problems.  Chronic teeth grinding can cause headache, ear pain, facial pain, and even migraines. Bruxism can cause loss of tooth enamel, increased tooth sensitivity, and flattening and/or chipping of the teeth. Bruxism sufferers frequently wake up with a sore jaw. Hypertrophy (over development) of the masseter muscle, may lead to the appearance of a severe square jaw as a result of bruxism.

Can botulism toxin help with bruxism?

Treatments with Botulinum Toxin Type A. can provide tremendous relief from jaw soreness, headaches, and other unpleasant problems associated with Bruxism. Botulinum toxin treatments for Bruxism can also soften the appearance of the jaw line and slim the face.

Will it hurt?

Not really. It is three quick injections into each jaw muscle with a very small needle. There is a small sharp pain, as with any needle, but it is minimal and this is one of the least painful treatments.

How long will it take?

10 minutes

Are there any side effects?

As with any procedure using a needle there is a small chance of bruising and infection. It is important that it is a qualified medical practitioner who completes the procedure to understand the underlying anatomy (the parotid gland is in this area and must be avoided).

When will i see the results?

The grinding will lessen within the first week and improve over the next few weeks as the muscle hypotrophies.

How long do the results last?

6-9 months.
